Below are some representative examples of the the systems change / mapping projects we've worked on. These are all 'evidence-based' maps in that they're initially built from a literature survey, and then refined via expert interviews and workshops with the relevant stakeholders.

Like most system maps, these examples are far from self-explanatory. In practice, they're always used with a careful explanatory build - something we'll be able to do online and interactively with the system visualization platform.

Tellus Mater
Sustainable Finance Map

The goal of the Tellus Mater Sustainable Finance System Map is to provide an integrated overview of the various efforts underway to transform finance into an efficient engine of green and equitable growth i.e. shifting capital flows away from ‘dirty’ industries and towards new more resource-efficient and sustainable enterprises. The map is the result of much desk-research, 50 interviews, a survey, and the critique of 5 workshops.

Forum for the Future
Sustainable Water Movement

This Forum for the Future project convened multiple stakeholders to map the current water movement system, and then imagine what a more sustainable one might look like: one that moves away from ‘hard engineering’ solutions – such as dredging and flood defence walls – and towards solutions that work with the natural lanscape and local communities to provide lower impact, more resilient solutions.

For this project, as in many others, we developed both a 'structural map' and an 'influence' or 'causal loop' diagram. The structural map depicts a physical watershed; aligned with the relevant technologies, users, governance organizations, and regulations. The causal loop diagram shows the lines of influence that connect the water-management system, as well as the leverage points for intervention chosen by the project group.


Sustainable Apparel Coalition
2020 Strategy

We worked with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, and a broader group of stakeholders, to build a strategic plan for its ambitious 2020 goals; positioning the SAC to engage the leading brands, NGOs, and retailers within the SAC and beyond. The project culminated with a strategic working session with the attendees of the 2013 Full Membership Meeting.


Physical Activity System
Nike | Designed to Move

Based on a comprehensive review of the relevant science, this is an integrated view of the many different factors that contribute to people being physically active. It was created to provide the foundation for the Designed to Move initiative.


Land Use Futures

This project on the future of land use took a broad look at the future of UK land use up to 2060 and beyond. It covered the whole spectrum of land use from urban to rural, exploring:

  • the land use challenges the UK could face over the next 50 years
  • the existing structures and mechanisms and their capacity to help us meet these challenges
  • the opportunities to use and manage land differently now and in the future

Food System Mapping

We've worked on a number of food system projects, including this view of the global food system for the Future of Food and Farming project, and a more simplified and refined view for the Nourish food system poster.


Mental Capital and Wellbeing

For this project on Mental capital and wellbeing we mapped many different aspects of wellbeing through life, including:

Obesity System Map

This project on obesity was done with my colleagues at shiftN for the Foresight unit of the UK government. This map represent the integration of about 80 science review papers. Click the thumbnail to open the interactive map which highlights the intertwining factors that contribute to obesity:
